Infant Massage Classes for Parents
Why should I massage my baby?
The Importance of Touch
Did you know that touch is both the first sense developed in utero and the sense most developed at birth? Humans need touch in order to thrive. Healthy, nurturing touch provides the physical contact, affection, security, stimulation and movement that infants need for healthy emotional and physiological development. Nurturing touch conveys love, caring and attention and is an excellent way for parents and caregivers to form healthy attachment with their babies.
The Benefits of Infant Massage
Infant Massage benefits both baby and parent/caregiver. Bonding that takes place during infant massage provides the infant with a sense of security and attachment, self-esteem and respect, and gives the parent/caregiver more awareness of their baby’s cues. Infant massage is a wonderful way for mothers, fathers, or other caregivers to share special time forming attachment and bonding with their babies.
Infant massage has been shown to improve children’s sleep patterns, lower levels of stress hormones, help ease colic, and aid in digestion/elimination. In fact, infant massage has been shown to positively affect the functioning of all the systems of the body--skeletal, muscular, digestive, circulatory, respiratory, and nervous systems. These benefits are just one of the topics covered in the infant massage series.
